Virgin Australia cancelled up to 30 flights over a recent weekend after cabin crew called in sick in numbers the airline's union attributes to accumulated fatigue rather than the seasonal demand spike Virgin Australia has pointed to publicly. The union representing the airline's flight attendants says crew have been assigned cabin-cleaning duties between flights in addition to their normal responsibilities, extending duty days and compressing the rest periods crew get between assignments during what is already one of the airline's busiest periods of the year. Flight Attendants' Association of Australia industrial relations manager Steven Reed described the expanded cleaning workload bluntly, saying crew "used to be a tidy-up, but now they practically have to wear hazmat suits" to describe the physical toll of the added duties. The union is using the disruption as leverage in ongoing contract negotiations, where it is seeking both pay increases and structural changes to working conditions, including shorter duty days and longer downtime between shifts. Virgin Australia's public response has largely stuck to seasonal framing, with the airline noting that "September is traditionally our busiest period of the year outside of Christmas" and acknowledging the period "can be demanding" for staff, without directly addressing the union's specific claims about cleaning-duty workload or the ongoing pay dispute.

The airline blamed seasonal demand, but its cabin crew union says expanded cleaning duties and thin rest periods between shifts are driving the sick-outs. Contract talks over pay and duty-day length are ongoing.
