United Flight Attendants' Union Admits It Failed Twice to Win Premium Seating on Deadheads

Source: Aero Crew News· 26 Sept 2026
The Association of Flight Attendants has publicly acknowledged that it failed on two separate occasions to secure premium cabin seating rights for United Airlines flight attendants travelling as deadheading crew, according to a union notice issued September 24 and reported September 26. The dispute centers on contract language in United's collective agreement guaranteeing flight attendants a business-class seat when deadheading, with premium economy specified as the fallback whenever business class isn't available — but the two sides disagree sharply on what "premium economy" actually means under that clause. United interprets it as Economy Plus, its standard extra-legroom economy product, while the union argues it should mean Premium Plus, the airline's genuine premium cabin introduced in 2018 with wider seats, deeper recline and dedicated amenities. An arbitrator ruled against the union on this question in April 2022, finding that the original contract language predated Premium Plus and that neither side had contemplated guaranteeing access to a cabin type that didn't yet exist when the clause was written. The union's own September notice conceded that it then negotiated two full subsequent contracts without revisiting or attempting to fix the issue, stating plainly that doing so "was not a priority" at the time. The disclosure effectively concedes a benefit gap that will likely now need to be addressed in United flight attendants' next round of contract talks rather than through further arbitration on the existing agreement.

The Association of Flight Attendants says it let a 2022 arbitration loss over deadhead seating stand through two subsequent contract cycles without revisiting it. The dispute centers on whether United's contract language guarantees the airline's true premium cabin or just extra-legroom economy seats.
