Ethiopian Airlines Orders Ten Boeing 777 Freighters, Becoming the First African 777-8F Customer
Ethiopian Airlines has signed for eight Boeing 777-8 freighters and two 777 freighters, with options on eight additional 777-8Fs, making it the first African carrier to order the 777-8F. The two 777Fs are due in 2027 and 2028, while the 777-8Fs arrive between 2033 and 2035, reflecting how far out the new freighter's delivery slots are. The deal is Ethiopian's second order for the 777X family, following its earlier commitment for eight 777-9 passenger aircraft. Cargo makes up about 23% of the airline's total revenue. Its current freight fleet comprises 12 777-200Fs, two 767-300Fs, one 767-300ER converted freighter and four converted 737-800 freighters, alongside a passenger fleet of 138 aircraft. Ethiopian also plans to convert four existing passenger aircraft to freighters. Group chief executive Mesfin Tasew said the new aircraft will strengthen the airline's ability to serve customers around the world.
The order covers eight 777-8Fs and two current-generation 777Fs, with options on eight more 777-8Fs. Cargo already accounts for roughly 23% of Ethiopian's revenue.
