Amris Aviation says most competency-based training grades are recorded without the evidence behind them

Writing at APATS 2026, Amris Aviation's Andy O'Shea and Cedric Paillard argue that competency-based and evidence-based training (CBTA/EBT) frequently fail to deliver on their promise because grading data isn't captured with enough detail to be useful. They point to four recurring problems: roughly 95% of "meets standard" grades carry no supporting comment or observed-behaviour detail, grading forms aren't built to capture behaviour-level evidence, assessor judgement drifts apart without ongoing monitoring, and the resulting data often goes unused rather than feeding back into safety or training decisions. The company is promoting its own AI-assisted grading system, Amris CMS, as a way to capture that evidence without replacing instructor judgement — and claims, without independent verification, that it could save a 250-aircraft fleet operator around €40 million a year.
